NBA 2K22 is an upcoming NBA basketball simulation video game by 2K Sports. It will be the twenty-third installment of the NBA 2K series, scheduled for release on September 10th, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. It will be the direct sequel to NBA 2K21, and will be followed by NBA 2K23. Luka Doncic is the main cover player, with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Dirk Nowitzki, and Kevin Durant appearing on the cover of the NBA 75th Anniversary Edition. Candace Parker appears on the cover of the GameStop exclusive WNBA 25th Anniversary Edition.

Versions[edit]

There are two version of NBA 2K22, commonly designated as "Current Gen" and "Next Gen". This nomenclature will likely change to "Last Gen" and "Current Gen" respectively once the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S have been established as the current generation, possibly as soon as NBA 2K23. A breakdown of the Current Gen and Next Gen versions is as follows:

  • The PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the PC/Windows port, are Current Gen.
  • The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S are Next Gen.

Cross-Generation Progression[edit]

As was the case with NBA 2K21, MyTEAM progression is cross-generation in NBA 2K22, meaning that cards, MyTEAM Points, Tokens, and all progress from one platform carries across in the same console family. The VC wallet is also shared between platforms, meaning any VC earned or purchased in one version is available in the other. By the same token, spending VC in one version will deplete that amount from your wallet in the other.

Conversely, MyCAREER progress is not cross-generation in NBA 2K22. As noted above, one VC wallet is shared across platforms in the same console family, so VC earned in one generation can be used to upgrade MyPLAYERs in the other version if desired.

Development & Features[edit]

The game was officially announced with its cover reveal on July 14th, 2021. The first screenshots were released on July 20th, featuring cover players Luka Doncic, Dirk Nowitzki, and Candace Parker.

Current Gen[edit]

NBA 2K21 Current Gen will be a sim-oriented basketball video game, retaining staple modes such as MyCAREER, MyGM, MyLEAGUE, MyTEAM, The Playground, The Neighborhood, and 2K Pro-Am, as well as gameplay elements such as the Pro Stick, and additional content such as the historical and WNBA teams.

Gameplay improvements in NBA 2K22 Current Gen include a greater focus on basketball IQ and stick skills. Offensive gameplay will be more skill-based, and the blocking and shot contest systems have been revamped.

As noted above, the Current Gen and Next Gen versions feature cross-generation progression for MyTEAM and a shared VC wallet in the same console family. MyCAREER progress does not carry over between platforms, however. MyTEAM retains the Seasons approach introduced in NBA 2K21, with each Season lasting about six weeks and featuring new cards and challenges. MyTEAM: Draft also returns, in which gamers can pick from a pool of players and take them into online games.

In contrast to Next Gen, Current Gen's MyCAREER will retain the cinematic approach introduced in NBA 2K14. The Neighborhood will now be situated on a cruise ship, which will dock at new locations representing different Seasons. Similar to MyTEAM's Seasons, each Season in MyCAREER will have its own theme and feature new opportunities for upgrading your MyPLAYER.

Next Gen[edit]

The Next Gen version of NBA 2K22 will likewise be a sim-oriented basketball game, with similar core mechanics to Current Gen but built on different tech. Series staples such as MyTEAM and MyCAREER return, along with MyCAREER's connected modes of The Playground, The Rec, and 2K Pro-Am, all located in The City. MyNBA will return as the game's franchise mode, which offers online, offline, and RPG elements, according to the user's preference. The WNBA will also return with MyWNBA (a franchise mode similar to MyNBA and its predecessors), The W (a career mode like MyCAREER), and The W Online (an exclusive 3v3 online mode).

NBA 2K22 Next Gen will feature the same gameplay improvements as Current Gen, with a focus on more skill-based offensive gameplay, and revamped shot contest and blocking systems.

MyTEAM in Next Gen will be identical to Current Gen, retaining the Seasons approach from NBA 2K21. As noted above, each season will last around six weeks and feature new cards and content. It will also feature MyTEAM: Draft, cross-generation progression, and a shared VC wallet.

Progress will not carry over in MyCAREER, and there will be greater integration between The City and MyCAREER in NBA 2K22. Rather than a "prelude" style cinematic story, The City will function as more of an open world than in previous games, with cutscenes and story elements being driven by the player's actions. Additionally, The City's layout has been redesigned, and there will be new NPCs and a revamped quest system.

The Seasons approach has also been adopted in both MyCAREER and The W. As in Current Gen, they will provide opportunities to upgrade your player through different special events.

Matchmaking buildings will also be present in The City, for quicker access to the online team play modes. Rookieville has also been removed, but Park Affiliations remain.

MyNBA and MyWNBA will include enhanced staff building features.
