NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 is an upcoming NBA-licensed arcade basketball video game developed by Saber Interactive, and published by 2K Sports. It is the sequel to NBA Playgrounds, and will be released on October 16th. The game was originally slated for release May 22nd, 2018 but was postponed on May 17th 2018, with the new name and a Fall release being announced on July 24th.

Development & Features

NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 was officially announced on April 17th, 2018. The game - originally titled NBA Playgrounds 2 - retains a similar style and approach to the original NBA Playgrounds, featuring NBA players in two-on-two action, set on various street courts. Elements such as NBA Jam-style high flying dunks and a casual approach to the rules of basketball will be retained.

Expanding on the original game, NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 will feature a worldwide online league with divisions and leaderboards, and adds online co-op play. An offline Season Mode has also been added, in which gamers take their squad through the regular season and Playoffs, with the ultimate goal of winning the NBA Championship. The official announcement also mentioned improvements to the AI and gameplay, while hinting at the introduction of some new mechanics.

The "Ball Without Limits" trailer, released September 18th, showcased gameplay, new modes, and some of the featured players, including Michael Jordan. It also confirmed the presence of an in-game currency, and an October 16th release date.

Delay

On May 17th, Saber announced that NBA Playgrounds 2 had been delayed. While they did not provide any further details as to the reason for the delay, they assured gamers it was for positive reasons that would ultimately benefit the game, stressing that "good things come to those who wait". No new release date was given in the immediate aftermath of the game's postponement. On May 21st, PlayStation 4 users who had pre-ordered NBA Playgrounds 2 received refunds for the game.

New Publisher & Rebranding to NBA 2K Playgrounds 2

After two months of silence, Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch announced via Forbes that the game would be published by 2K Sports, bringing it under the same umbrella as the NBA 2K series. The game itself will still be developed by Saber.

Roster

NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 will feature over 200 current and retired NBA players. With the game joining the 2K Family, Michael Jordan has been licensed to appear.
