NBA Live 16 Christmas Showdown, Other Highlights

NBA Live 16 Christmas Showdown, Other Highlights

Merry Christmas and Season’s Greetings, basketball gamers! I hope that you’re all enjoying the festive season. That might include spending some time on the virtual hardwood, and indeed, that’s what Dee and I have been doing, playing a Christmas Day showdown between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors in NBA Live 16!

As you may recall, Christmas Day 2015 featured that NBA Finals rematch, and the special jerseys that were worn in that game are available in NBA Live 16. To that end, it only made sense to take control of the eventual champion Cavs in co-op play, and try to gain some revenge over the team that defeated them just a few months prior. It was a competitive battle with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving doing their thing, while the Splash Brothers gave us everything they had at the other end. It reminded us of how fun NBA Live 16 can be, and you’ll find the highlights below.

You can also look forward to our recap of the game in Episode #508 of the NLSC Podcast, which will be out soon. Prior to our most recent show, Dee also fired up NBA 2K24 PC with some NBA In-Season Tournament mods installed, and played the finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and Indiana Pacers. On top of that, I’ve put together a highlight reel from Games 21-30 in Year 6 of my NBA 2K14 MyCAREER on PlayStation 4. Both of those videos can also be found below.

It’s been a great year of producing basketball gaming content for the NLSC YouTube channel, so be sure to subscribe if you haven’t already! As always, feel free to hit us up with any suggestions of games that you’d like to see us play. Once again, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and best wishes to you and your family!

Wayback Wednesday: NBA What Ifs Portrayed in NBA Live 10

Wayback Wednesday: NBA What Ifs Portrayed in NBA Live 10

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m taking a look back at some famous NBA What Ifs, and portraying them in NBA Live 10.

What Ifs can be fun to ponder, whether they concern the NBA or video games. There are trades and signings that, if they’d happened, would’ve changed the course of NBA history. Likewise, we can point to game-changing moments in the history of the virtual hardwood. Indeed, NBA Live 10 is an example of such a turning point. If EA Sports had elected to continue building on the base it established rather than trying to reboot the series with the ill-fated NBA Elite 11, the basketball gaming landscape would undoubtedly be very different today.

As far as NBA What Ifs are concerned though, they’re something that we can play out in video games. It’s a great concept for a roster, and while that’s not what I’m doing today, I’ve decided to mix a couple of ideas together by reflecting on some of the biggest NBA What Ifs and portraying them using NBA Live 10; a game that has an air of What If about it. Obviously there are some other historical NBA What Ifs that I won’t be touching on here because the players aren’t in NBA Live 10, but feel free to discuss those in the comments as well. Let’s wonder what might have been as we take a look back…way back…

Wayback Wednesday: Kobe Bryant’s Fictional NBA 2K10 Cover

Kobe Bryant New York Knicks NBA 2K10 Cover

This is Wayback Wednesday, your midweek blast from the past! In this feature, we dig into the archives, look back at the history of basketball gaming, and indulge in some nostalgia. Check in every Wednesday for retrospectives and other features on older versions of NBA Live, NBA 2K, and old school basketball video games in general. You’ll also find old NLSC editorials re-published with added commentary, and other flashback content. This week, I’m taking a look back at Kobe Bryant’s fictional NBA 2K10 cover.

Since the preview season officially tipped off with the reveal of NBA 2K20’s cover players, I thought it would be appropriate to look back ten years to NBA 2K10. If you poke around for NBA 2K10 images on Google, you’ll no doubt come across a version of the cover featuring Kobe Bryant in a New York Knicks jersey; a uniform he never wore during his career. Of course, many basketball gamers have made mock-up and fictional alternate covers for various games over the years (to say nothing of bootleg copies), and they tend to show up in Google Image searches as well.

What’s interesting about this particular cover is that it’s an official fake, if that’s not too much of a contradiction in terms. More specifically, it’s an image that 2K made following the announcement that Kobe would be appearing on the cover. What’s the story behind this unusual cover that no doubt made Knicks fans wistful, and Lakers fans cringe? Let’s take a look back…way back…

Updated NBA 2K18 Cover Available To Download & Print

Kyrie Irving on the Boston Celtics in NBA 2K18

After Kyrie Irving was traded to the Boston Celtics, 2K announced that they would be issuing an updated cover for NBA 2K18. Although the title screen and digital covers for the game were already updated at launch, the initial run of copies featured the original cover with Irving wearing a Cleveland Cavaliers jersey. Once this stock has been depleted, new copies of NBA 2K18 will feature the revised cover.

However, if you’ve got a physical copy of NBA 2K18 and you’d like to replace the cover in the meantime, 2K has released downloadable versions of the new artwork which you can print out and slide right into the case. Interestingly, they’ve also released downloadable versions of the original cover, presumably for anyone who’d like to replace the Celtics cover when it’s in circulation, or perhaps the Legend Edition cover featuring Shaquille O’Neal, if you’re a big Kyrie Irving and Cavs fan.

If you’d like to print out an updated cover, please see below for links to all the different regional files.

New NBA 2K18 Cover Unveiled; Prelude Out Soon

NBA 2K18 Cover

2K Sports have revealed the new cover art for NBA 2K18, featuring Kyrie Irving in a Boston Celtics jersey. Following the trade between the Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers, 2K indicated that they would be issuing a new cover “at a later date”. While the digital cover art and icon for the game will be updated upon launch, physical copies won’t feature the new cover art until the initial stock is depleted.

Although it isn’t unprecedented in sports games, cover players changing teams before the game is even released is a rare occurrence. Several players have been traded the year after appearing on the cover of a basketball video game, and Ray Allen was traded halfway through the 2003 season, during which he was the cover player for NBA ShootOut 2002.

The ShootOut series also features the only other cover player for a basketball game to be traded before the game’s release, as the 2002 version featured Stephon Marbury in his New Jersey Nets uniform despite his offseason trade to the Phoenix Suns. Similar to NBA 2K18, an updated cover was later issued.

You can check out the full cover art below. We’re a week away from the release of NBA 2K18, but only a couple of hours away from the release of The Prelude! If you’re on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One and would like to get a head start on MyCAREER, be sure to check it out when it launches at 12:01 AM EST. The MyNBA2K18 app is also now available for Android and iOS devices, so pick it up to scan your face into the game, and earn extra VC through various mini-games.

NBA 2K18 News Round-Up: New Cover, ’07 Warriors & More

NBA 2K18: Baron Davis

There’s been a flurry of NBA 2K18 news today, so let’s get caught up on all the latest details!

Easily the biggest story in the NBA this week is the trade that has sent Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and the Brooklyn Nets’ first round pick in 2018. Irving is of course the cover player for NBA 2K18, and in the wake of the deal, the cover art is now oudated. Jason Argent, senior vice president of basketball operations for 2K, released a statement indicating that there will be a version of NBA 2K18 featuring Irving in a Celtics jersey, coming “at a later date”.

After revealing the final two classic teams in this year’s game, it seems that 2K have managed to squeeze in one more. The 2007 Golden State Warriors will be featured in NBA 2K18, suggesting that LD2K’s hint in the 2K TV season finale wasn’t just a red herring. The addition of the ’07 Warriors brings the total number of new classic teams to seventeen; please see below for the full updated list. You can also check out a screenshot of Baron Davis on that memorable underdog squad, along with some other new screens including Kobe Bryant on the All-Time Los Angeles Lakers. Find them below, as well as here in our NBA 2K18 Screenshots gallery.

Finally, during today’s live stream, 2K also announced a global broadcast on the official NBA 2K Facebook page on August 31st. Further details about NBA 2K18 will be revealed during the event, including information on MyCAREER. Notably, the event is titled “Run the Neighborhood”, and a #RunTheNeighborhood hashtag is being promoted. This may offer some clues as to the story in this year’s MyCAREER mode.

As always, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below, as well as join in the discussion taking place in our NBA 2K18 Forum.

NLSC Podcast – Episode #215

NLSC Podcast Logo

Episode #215 of the NLSC Podcast is out now! Arcane and I have plenty to talk about this week with the first proper previews for NBA 2K18 coming out, along with the latest content update for NBA Playgrounds. There’s also Kyrie Irving’s trade demand, a short article on shoes in NBA Live 18, and more.

On this week’s show…

  • The first NBA 2K18 screenshots have been released. What do we think of this year’s aesthetics?
  • We received a ton of information about MyLEAGUE and MyGM by way of the first developer blog. This year’s franchise modes sound awesome!
  • Did the 2K TV finale drop a hint about additional retro teams in NBA 2K18? We believe it’s a possibility.
  • Sole Collector published a short article about shoes in NBA Live 18, which also went into the history of EA Sports getting authentic shoes into their game.
  • The next big content update for NBA Playgrounds has come through. While there are still a few issues with the game, it continues to get better and better.
  • Not surprisingly, the five copies of NBA Elite 11 listed on eBay for $30,000 USD didn’t sell. They haven’t been re-listed, but another copy is still available…for $4,000 USD.
  • Our Week in Basketball Gaming included some of the most enjoyable sessions of online play we’ve ever had, in both 2K Pro-Am and MyPARK. Also, grinding for packs in NBA Playgrounds, MyTEAM Domination, and fantasy exhibitions.
  • Kyrie Irving has surprisingly demanded a trade. We wonder where he’ll end up, and whether Visual Concepts will do anything about the NBA 2K18 cover if he’s dealt.
  • We wrap up Episode #215 of the NLSC Podcast with some information on the latest NLSC merch by Arcane Apparel.

Kyrie Irving Announced As Cover Player for NBA 2K18

NBA 2K18 Cover Art

With the third straight NBA Finals clash between the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers set to tip off today, 2K Sports has revealed that All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving of the defending champion Cavs will grace the cover of NBA 2K18. As previously announced, Shaquille O’Neal will appear on the covers of the Legend Edition and Legend Edition Gold.

Kyrie Irving previously appeared on the cover of NBA Live 14, making him the third player to appear on both the cover of NBA Live and NBA 2K, following Shaquille O’Neal (NBA Live 96, NBA 2K6, NBA 2K7, NBA 2K18) and Kevin Garnett (NBA Live 2001, NBA 2K9). Kevin Durant, whom Kyrie Irving and the Cavs will face in this year’s NBA Finals, was the cover player for the ultimately cancelled NBA Elite 11. He would later go on to appear on the cover of NBA 2K13 along with Blake Griffin and Derrick Rose, and was also the lone cover player for NBA 2K15.

Although no specific details have been revealed at this time, it’s likely that pre-order customers will receive some sort of Kyrie Irving-themed gear for their MyPLAYER, as was the case with Paul George’s Team USA apparel in NBA 2K17. As previously noted, the Legend Edition and Legend Edition Gold will provide a selection of Shaquille O’Neal-themed bonus content, including physical collectables in the Gold edition. As soon as any further details are made available, we’ll be sure to post them.

You can check out a larger image of the cover below. Any thoughts on Kyrie Irving’s selection as the cover player for NBA 2K18? Have your say in the comments, and join in the discussion here in the NLSC Forum! For a history of NBA 2K cover players, check out this article in our Wiki.

NBA 2K17 Screenshot: Kyrie Irving

NBA 2K17: Kyrie Irving

Today’s NBA 2K17 screenshot has been posted over on the official NBA 2K Instagram account, and it features Kyrie Irving. So far, it looks as though my prediction may be accurate, as Irving is another member of Team 2K. If my prediction is correct, the next few screenshots will likely feature Kevin Durant, Draymond Green, Andre Drummond, Jimmy Butler, and Karl-Anthony Towns.

You can check out the screenshot of Irving below, as well as in our NBA 2K17 gallery. Higher resolution screenshots of Kyrie Irving and Paul George have also been made available, so be sure to check them out as well.

Another interesting tidbit that’s come through today is 2K’s announcement that NBA 2K17 will be at this year’s Gamescom in Cologne, Germany.

This likely means that we’ll be seeing some over-the-shoulder footage popping up on YouTube. Of course, there’s only so much we can glean from such footage, and there’s always a chance it will be pulled after being flagged by Visual Concepts. Nevertheless, gameplay footage (of a kind) and impressions are likely on the way this week.

Any thoughts on the latest screenshots? Feel free to share them in the comments section below, as well as in this thread in the NLSC Forum.
